Apple’s iPhone Will Now Feature Japanese Earthquake Alert

Using the next version of Apple’s iOS operating system, Japanese iPhone users will now get an option to receive earthquake alerts according to a 9to5Mac report. This earthquake alert feature will be added to the device’s notification centre in iOS 5 that is expected to release in the coming month.

Japan is said to have a sophisticated system of early warning system that will collect readings from more than a thousand seismic sensors. In Japan, mostly the earthquake warnings are issued through radio, television and text message under the Area Mail Disaster Information Service that sends a mass cell broadcast (SMS-CB) to all handsets in an area about to be struck with a natural tragedy.

3G mobiles have been conditioned to include SMS-CB technology under the Japanese law, but a lot of the foreign-made phones do not provide this technology. Steve Jobs sent an email to Japanese employees of Apple asking them if they or their families needed any support after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Cell Broadcast Settings Menu Came With Jelly Bean for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus

Imagem Postada

After digging into settings menus in the Jelly Bean update that was released this week for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus, a handful of readers noticed that a new “Cell Broadcast settings” area was now included. This new area appears to give you control over emergency alerts that could push through to your handset. For example, a child abduction notification could appear on your phone should one happen near you. I’m assuming that a notification of some sort would also pop up if say a hurricane were blowing through, if an earthquake just went down, or if some sort of terrorist activity that threaten lives was happening. You can even set your phone up to speak them out loud as they appear on your device.

We hadn’t noticed these on any other phone before, even a GSM Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean, and wanted to share. We aren’t sure if this is something that is only showing because this is a test build or if this is indeed going to be a new standard in Android going forward. Pretty neat, though, right?

To access the menu, head into Settings>Wireless & networks>Cell broadcasts.

Cheers Steven and 4n1m4l!

Low-Tech Ideas Bring Smart Abilities to Feature Phones

Simple cellphones may not be so… non-smart after all. Two systems under development look to add smart abilities to simple cellphones, including location-based weather reports, navigation help and file sharing, the New Scientist reported. The systems will bring these features to the majority of cellphone users around the world, who don't use smartphones. Plus, research on these systems may ultimately benefit smartphone users, too.

The majority of the world cellphone users have so-called "feature phones," or the last generation of cells before smartphones. That's especially true in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, according to the New Scientist. Even in North America, 37 percent of cellphone users have feature phones. Feature phones are affordable for middle- and low-income families, and they can be popular in communities that don't have access to other technology, such as computers.

The first smarter feature phone idea helps friends share files over Bluetooth, by predicting when a friend with a desired file will be nearby. A team of scientists from research centers in India are working on the system, which they've named MobiShare.

The second idea uses a cellphone network technology called Cell Broadcast Service to provide functions that work like location-based smartphone apps. The Indian team wrote software that uses Cell Broadcast Service data, plus Google Maps data that's accessible over regular cellular networks, to provide rough coordinates for phones. The coordinates aren't accurate enough for turn-by-turn navigation, but they are able to point out landmarks to help people find their way, one of the software's developers, Kuldeep Yadav, told the New Scientist. Yadav is a graduate student at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi.

one2many introduces LTE Cell Broadcast emergency alerts

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Deventer, The Netherlands – one2many, the world’s leading Cell Broadcast company, has today announced that it has successfully completed IOT for its LTE interface. The addition of SBc to its library of network interfaces enables mobile operators to extend Cell Broadcast services, like Emergency Alerts, to their next generation LTE networks.
Over 300 operators have committed to LTE, and the GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association) expects to have 150 commercial LTE networks operating in 64 countries by end-2012. As LTE handsets become available in the market place, one2many’s customers have requested LTE support on their multi RAN technology CBC platforms. Cell Broadcast, a one-to-many textual broadcast technology, is standardized and available on 2G, 3G and now LTE. In addition, CB is the only standardized wireless technology for Emergency Alerts.

Cell Broadcast is being introduced worldwide as a next generation wireless Emergency Alert service and will continue to play a crucial role in public safety, allowing governments to make vital public announcements to millions of citizens, within seconds, on a location-aware basis, without violating subscriber privacy or being affected by network congestion. Some of the Public Warning initiatives around the world are: EU-Alert, ETWS and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA – a part of CMAS) which was recently launched in the United States by the FCC and FEMA.

Maarten Mes, Managing Director of one2many, commented: “There is no better use of mobile technology than for Emergency Alerts. Our customers have requested and even demanded LTE support on our Cell Broadcast systems which are already in use on CDMA, GSM, 3G and Wifi networks. We are delighted to enable our customers to create a safer world for their subscribers.”

one2many provides Cell Broadcast technology to telecoms operators across the world. Cell Broadcast technology delivers a non-intrusive, real-time service for the distribution of text-based messages to mobile handsets, specific to their current location. Cell Broadcast is capable of broadcasting one single message to reach all mobile handsets in an area as small as one radio cell and as big as an entire country. Sending a message to millions of handsets takes a matter of seconds, making the service ideal for applications such as public warning, location-based services and mobile social media.
